Unitech was conceived and incorporated as a professional Construction Management firm in 1988 by Rick Boates, who at the time was a project manager with sixteen years' experience in the design consulting and inspection segment of the construction industry. Rick worked as an owner's representative during those years, and over time became very frustrated with the 'us versus them' confrontational mentality that often existed between owner's teams and their contractors. He decided to try a different approach.
Rick's fresh approach to the world of construction would focus on construction professionals and consultants working collaboratively with owners as part of a unified project team. From project inception to completion, Unitech would ensure all goals would remain aligned with those of the client. All systems and procedures would be designed to respond to the client's priorities, providing clear, concise information that the client needs to stay fully informed and in control of their project.
As Unitech developed as a company it expanded its services to all sectors of the construction industry, including education, health, municipal, recreation, commercial and residential, with a significant focus on First Nations projects throughout British Columbia. Through this growth our reputation for quality, integrity and value began to take shape.
In 1999 Unitech reached a significant milestone with the completion of the company's 100th project. At the same time, we began to look at the impact of construction on the environment. To champion this cause, Unitech became a member of the Canada Green Building Council, invested in research and development for green construction, trained employees in all aspects of sustainable construction and ensured the company had LEED-Accredited Professionals (APs) on staff. Unitech's first LEED project was completed in 2002.
Now, as we approach our 30th anniversary, Unitech's project portfolio approaches $1 billion, with roughly 85% of those projects completed for repeat clients. A true testament to the commitment and value provided to our clients. Unitech has now grown to more than 100 employees and we provide construction management services for major education, recreation, institutional, commercial and multi-family residential projects in many urban, rural and remote communities throughout British Columbia and Alberta.
As we continue to grow today, we remain committed to our original vision of partnering with our clients and adopting their project specific goals and priorities. We factor those goals and priorities into every recommendation we make moving forward. We don't just work with our clients, we are their construction division, delivering their projects in accordance with their goals and in collaboration with their staff. We treat your money as if it is our own. It is the foundation of our corporate values and our entire organization lives and breathes it everyday.
